Carnival Weekend 2012
If your trip to Barcelona, coincides with the dates of the carnival and especially if traveling with children, we propose a weekend of fun.
On Saturday, February 18th in the evening, between 18.00 and 21.00 we propose you stay in town to see the Carnival in Barcelona. There are many parades and participants who follow the rhythm of the music, especially Caribbean and other music hits of the moment.
There are four big parade at a time, so choose the one nearest you, because they are all fun. They will be held in the old districts of Sants, Gracia, Horta and one in Av. Paral.lel.
On Sunday, February 19th morning, we move to a coastal town near Barcelona called Vilanova i la Geltrú.
Here they celebrate the traditional Caramelada, the ultimate party of the carnival of Vilanova i la Geltrú. This festival is a sweet candy war between different carnival troupes, which are distinguished by the color of the flag that leads the troupe.
During the morning the people from the vila, organized by groups, runs through the old city doing parades, each one with it's own live music orchestra, they are all dressed with traditional costumes, like a typical skullcap called barratina the men's and a shawl on the shoulders named manton de manila the women's.
Right after the parades, around noon time, all the groups target the Plaça de la Villa, in front of the town hall and there is where they dance, sing and throw tons of candy. Don't miss it, it's a unique and very spectacular party !!!
This activity is highly recommended for both children and adults, is great and very fun for visitors.
For lunch we recommend the restaurant Peixerot, located on the seafront with an excellent menu with seafood dishes and of course the signature dish, the paella. You better book in advance, that day might be very busy.
That same Sunday, right after lunch we will move to Sitges, which is about 15 minutes from Vilanova i la Geltru or 30 minutes from Barcelona. It is well connected whether going by car, or if you've chosen going by train, with a direct train from one vila to another from city centers.
Sunday night takes place one of the two great parades that take place this week in the city of Sitges. This one is called Rua de la Disbauxa. In this parade there are about 3,000 participants and 50 floats, all choreographed with the rhythm of samba, merengue or other Caribbean music. Starts around 19.30 from Cap de la Vila (Town Hall) and goes to the promenade, ending around 22:00.
If you like it and want to repeat, you have a second chance on Tuesday, February 21st with the Rua de l'Extermini parade with the same route but with many more visitors.
There are child parades at three o'clock in the afternoon the same days than the big parades.
Surely the weekend has been exhausting, but you have been participating on some of the best parties around Barcelona. I'm glad you enjoy it!!
Happy Carnival !!
